Atlantic Square, 1889

The focal point of downtown life was Atlantic Square. This is where the early settlers built their first meeting house. At left is Central Park. The large building straight ahead is the old Town Hall, erected in 1871. It stood at Atlantic and Main Streets until it burned in 1904. The rail around the park was used for tethering horses.
