Charlotte Gregory Selleck (1788–1841)

iCharlotte Gregory Selleck

Oil on canvas
Artist unknown
H152w02
Gift of William Howard Haines

We apologize for the poor quality of the photo: The professional one was missed during the photo project. However, this will give the viewer an impression of the subject.

Charlotte was the daughter of Captain Abraham and Dorothy Lockwood Gregory of Norwalk, Connecticut. Abraham was a Revolutionay War soldier and is listed in 1780 as “Captain of Horse.” Charlotte was the wife of Captain William Selleck and bore him eight children, one of whom is seen in this exhibit.

It has been suggested that all three portraits were commissioned at the same time to the same artist. However, William and Charlotte’s portraits are painted in oil on canvas while James portrait is an oil on panel and is the only one currently attributed to the well-known portraitist, Charles Loring Elliott.
